Check the sticker on the back of the router. Look for: MC801A followed by a 3-digit code (e.g., V1.0.0 , V2.0.0 , or carrier-specific like TELSTRA , TMO , THREE ). Do not flash a generic firmware onto a carrier-locked unit unless you know how to recover it.
What You Need
A Windows PC (flashing tools rarely work on Mac/Linux). A USB-A to USB-C cable (data sync capable, not just charging). The correct firmware file ( .pkg or .zip - source from XDA-Developers or 4PDA forums). Method 1: Web Interface Update (Official/Safe) This only works if you have a genuine update package from your carrier or ZTE.
Connect to the MC801A’s Wi-Fi or LAN port. Open browser → 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1 ). Login (default: admin / admin or password on the sticker). Go to Settings → Device Management → Software Update . Choose Local Update → Select the firmware file → Update . Wait 5–10 minutes (do not power off).

Power off the MC801A. Remove the SIM card and any attached USB devices. Locate the Reset pinhole (next to the power port).
