Liebe unter siebzehn was only his second feature film. The East German state-owned studio (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft) was wary of Junge’s naturalistic style. Unlike propaganda-heavy films of the 1950s, Junge encouraged improvisation from his young actors. The script by Gisela Richter-Rostalski was deliberately loose, allowing scenes to breathe.

"Liebe unter Siebzehn" is set in the late 1960s and revolves around the lives of two teenage girls, Brigitte and Juliane, who are both 17 years old. The film takes a snapshot of their lives, capturing the essence of adolescence during this era. The story follows their experiences, struggles, and relationships, offering a poignant portrayal of young adulthood.
