The story is set in the 10th century, during the reign of the Chola dynasty. The king, Raja Soma, is a devotee of Lord Shiva, while his queen, Rani, is a devotee of Lord Vishnu. The king and queen are childless, and they pray to their respective deities for a child. Lord Vishnu appears to the queen and grants her a son, who is none other than Sri Venkateswara.
