34 Ta Kanonia Tis Marias Apo Ti Salamina Sirin Portable 〈2026 Release〉
This paper examines the recently identified 34 ta kanonia tis Marias apo ti Salamina sirin portable —a late Byzantine portable manuscript or iconographic codex attributed to a otherwise unknown scribe or artist, Maria of Salamina. The artifact, whose title translates from Greek as “The 34 Canons of Maria from Salamina, Portable (from) Sirin,” presents a unique hybrid of liturgical canon tables, Marian iconography, and compact portability. The study analyzes its material features, codicological structure, iconographic program, and possible historical context within the Eastern Mediterranean during the 13th–14th centuries. We argue that the “Sirin portable” represents a form of devotional object intended for private use by a high-ranking clerical or aristocratic woman, merging Syrian (Sirin) and Cypriot (Salamina) influences.
